The Technological Noose Tightens

Broadcaster Glenn Beck believes that the Amazon drone unveiled on CBS's "60 Minutes" Sunday night is a flash of genius from CEO Jeff Bezos that will change the world.

Speaking with Sean Hannity Monday night, Beck proclaimed that Bezos' vision was a perfect example of the American entrepreneurial spirit which gave him hope for the future of the country.

"We can either tear each other apart or we can see that world that Amazon was talking about last night on '60 Minutes,' where literally the sky is the limit," Beck said. "Everything you know is about to change."

On his radio show Monday, Beck explained that the Amazon drone program reminded him of great inventors like Nikola Tesla.

"We’re on the threshold of it right now. The Jetsons, it’s here," Beck said. "It is the next chapter in the world.”

The prophets of Progress - Beck, Limbaugh, et al. - are all hailing Bezos’s new idea for ‘creative destruction’:  drone delivery of online orders.

This is not the Southern way.  Southerners, as befits any Christian people, have always been fonder of people and a settled order than of gadgets and ceaseless change (e.g., Richard Weaver, The Southern Tradition at Bay: A History of Postbellum Thought, eds. Core, George and M. E. Bradford, 1st ed., Washington, D. C.: Regnery Gateway, 1989, pgs. 37, 43.).  This ‘flash of genius’ will only further ‘depersonalize’ (‘The word is central in Weaver’s vocabulary.’  M. E. Bradford, ‘The Agrarianism of Richard Weaver’, Remembering Who We Are: Observations of a Southern Conservative, Athens, Ga.: U. of Georgia Press, 1985, p. 80 & p. 167, note 22) our society, as have any number of other supposedly great technological inventions like the television, iPhone, motor car, mechanized agriculture, the factory assembly line, and all the rest of it.

But this may forebode something even worse: a sharpening of the vision of the American Empire’s All-Seeing Eye.  Having conditioned the public to accept drones as harmless delivery vehicles, it will not be long before the NSA, CIA, FBI, etc. are using them to spy on innocent Southerners, Midwesterners, etc.,

just as the DHS is now using light posts to spy on innocent folks:

With any luck, though, our knuckle-dragging Southern sharpshooters will bring to fulfilment the anxiety of some of ‘drones being shot out of the sky’ (infowars.com drone story, above) if they begin to be used in unwholesome ways.

But Beck et al. are either very naïve or are part of the globalist Elite who want to undermine everything traditional in order to build their godless, worldwide Paradise.  Neither choice is at all comforting, considering the millions who follow them, expecting to hear what is true and good.

Let us be all the more diligent, then, in turning away from them and familiarizing ourselves with our own Southern tradition, which does contain many things good and true and beautiful, by exploring

-works by Richard Weaver and M.E. Bradford;
-the poetry of Southerners like Donald Davidson, Poe, Timrod, Lanier, et al.;
-the ballads and other folk music of the South;
-agrarian books like I’ll Take My Stand, Why the South Will Survive, or Who Owns America?;
-books on the older inheritance of the South like St Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People or Bishop Asser’s Life of King Alfred;
-or any of the many books listed by The Abbeville Institute:  http://www.abbevilleinstitute.org/index.php/recommended-reading

No culture can survive unless there is an active effort to maintain and strengthen it from generation to generation, especially when it is beset by destructive forces.  The South is no exception to this rule.
