‘A Fine Thanksgiving Day’

O God,
We give thanks to you
With bursting bellies
And drunken lips
And very many shopping trips;

With churches cold and empty,
With altars bare
And bodyless naves,
With doors locked and bolted fast
For fear of Christian worshippers;

With corn dressing
Rearranged genetically
And glyphosate enhanced;

With swine meat
Raised in a cruel, cramped cage
And fed methicilline;

With pistons firing
And motors roaring,
Highways clogged
And jets a-screaming;

With dagger-words
Sharp and hot,
Flung at one another
Over idols blue and red;

With reconciliation made
Round the latest
Horror flick onscreen;

O God,
We bless you
From our devil-darkened hearts.
Surely you will bless us, too,
For we are Puritan Americans, through and through!

Holy Ælfred the Great, King of England, South Patron, pray for us sinners at the Souð, unworthy though we are!

Anathema to the Union!
