‘St Botolph’s Town’

For centuries the Yankees have decreed

That they are god’s chosen people,

Sent to spread righteousness throughout the world.

As proof of divine favor, they display

Usury, technology, and polyamory.

From persecuting witches to welcoming them;

From established churches to mocking

Christian morals, New England is full

Of contradictions, the greatest of which,

Perhaps, lies deep within the blasphemous

Heart of the Yankee megalopolis,

The Brahmanic city of Boston,

Where sleeps suppressed the mem’ry of her

Namesake and her chiefest Patron,

Saint Botolph of Ikanhoe.  In him are no

Wild fluctuations between light and dark,

But only a constant stream of Light,

Joyful and uplifting, flowing

From a clear and sparkling mein.

The Yankee heart writhes within,

Unable to withstand the burning

Presence of that holy man

Who made of eastern England

A Christian land, filled with crosses,

Monks, and churches, and healing springs.

Because of her unfaithfulness and envy,

She tries to smother that source of Life

Within her.  But he who drove the demons

From the land, and turned the swampy fens

Into fertile ground, is strong enough

To turn the reins of proud New England,

If only for a single second

She would open up a tiny seam

Of sorrow in her heart of solid iron

Through which the energies of God

Could enter in and transform the debased

Metropolis into the happier

Abode she secretly longs for,

In which God and man, angel, beast, and plant,

Dwell together in delightful harmony,

The harmony she seeks now in bio-

Digital convergence, the happiness

Of Ikanhoe that will remain

Just outside her reach, till the spurning

Of her saintly founding father comes to ending.

Holy Ælfred the Great, King of England, South Patron, pray for us sinners at the Souð, unworthy though we are!

Anathema to the Union!
