Protestants Err Badly on Interpretation of the Book of Revelation

The hosts of American Family Radio’s Exploring the Word program – Bert Harper and Alex McFarland – made a disgraceful interpretation of St John’s Apocalypse on their 27 July 2026 show.  Their dispensationalist, radically Jewish-centered worldview made them interpret the symbol of the woman in travail in Revelation chapter 12 to be the Jewish people suffering antisemitism.  A cursory glance at what the Church Fathers, men truly full of the Holy Ghost and not their own egotism – a cursory glance at their commentaries on Revelation 12 reveals that they viewed the woman as a symbol of either the Mother of God (the Virgin Mary) or the Orthodox Church (cf. The Apocalypse by Archbishop Averky Taushev and Fr Seraphim Rose; the Orthodox Study Bible; Fr Daniel Sysoev’s Explanation of the Apocalypse; Volume III of Archimandrite Athanasios Mitilinaios’s Revelation commentary).  The Jewish interpretation is something that Misters McFarland and Harper pulled out of thin air; it has no precedent among the Church’s commentators on the Bible.  It is sad to say, but to be a Protestant today means more and more that one must be willfully ignorant of Church history.
