‘Earthly Paradise’

The fallen world is frozen
In a Romish church,
With fleshy statues round,
Bole and bough for pillar and arch,
And a high and vaulted ceiling
For the frigid, empty sky.

But creation vanishes
Completely after Luther,
Devoured in the fire
Of the Gnostic Protestant mind.
Cold logic of spoken word,
Hot feeling of revival meeting -
These adorn the inside
Of their bare-walled worship houses.

The world is transfigured
In an Orthodox church.
The saints in new bodies
Greet the folk with shining
Tabor light in holy icons.
Martyrs’ relics radiate
The Grace of the Holy Ghost,
Foreshadowing the age to come.
Sacred vestments bless
Those who touch with faith.
Bodies and souls blaze
Like the burning bush of Mose
Upon receiving the Leof Body
And Blood of the Lord.

And this same Christ the Great King
Watches o’er this earthly Paradise,
Which He has joined
With all the world
To His holy divinity,
From the highest dome.

Holy Ælfred the Great, King of England, South Patron, pray for us sinners at the Souð, unworthy though we are!

Anathema to the Union!
