‘The Decline of Christianity in the West’

Many Christians in the West, like this fellow, are puzzled and dismayed by the muted response of Western leaders to the blasphemy during the Opening Ceremonies of the Paris Olympics:

Think about it: Our mortal enemy—Christendom‘s arch-adversary since their very conception in the Middle East—is now the only state actor actively defending Christ on the world stage.

(For instance, the Book of Concord has a reference stating that the Ottoman Empire [encapsulating Muslims as a whole] was the “most atrocious, hereditary, and ancient enemy of the Christian name and religion”)

I wish I could go back and tell Aquinas, Calvin, Martin Luther, and/or some of the Popes that this day would arrive. Could you imagine what they’d say? They probably wouldn’t even believe it.

Unfortunately, it is such men (Popes and Reformers) who have weakened the Church in the West by, in Christos Yannaras’s words, ‘religionizing’ Christianity, making it an individualistic, legalistic, earthly organization.  He writes,

‘The West thus abandoned the Gospel understanding of “salvation” (making a human being “sound,” intact, as a hypostatic existence through participation in the ecclesial mode of loving existence and communion).  The West returned to the commonplace religious concept of the legalistic justification of the individual through his or her virtues, self-control and good works.

‘Augustine’s legalistic way of thinking supports “individual” justification in juridical categories acceptable to the Roman mentality, introducing into the relationship between humanity and God a concept which we can call “transactional metaphysics.”

‘This “transactional metaphysics” is based on Augustine’s assumption that human sin is a “debt” which must be “redeemed” for justification in the sight of God.  Redemption is realized on two levels:  theologically by Christ’s death on the cross, offered as a “ransom” for the settlement of the infinitely great “debt” of human sin and impiety towards God, and anthropologically by the “penalty” imposed on the sinner which must be paid if his sins are to be redeemed.

‘ . . . But from the ninth century this “transactional metaphysics” had already entered into Western religious life.  Religious texts present God as a “sadistic father” burning to satisfy his justice, and by logical extension delighted at the torture of sinners in hell.  . . .

‘No other Christian heresy so effectively distorted the Christian Gospel.  Perhaps this was because the West adopted the individual’s natural tendency to reduce this wonderful existential invitation to his own level, to “religionize” the Church’s inner life, to subject it to the demands of individual ideological certainty and psychological moral self-sufficiency.  This natural tendency has always been a temptation for Christian consciences – ever since the time of the Judaizers of the first Christian communities.

‘ . . . In recent centuries discontented Europeans have realized something was wrong but underestimated the extent of the problem.  They turned against “dogma” which made faith into a codified set of propositions, replacing experience by intellectualism’ (Orthodoxy and the West: Hellenic Self-Identity in the Modern Age, Chamberas and Russell, trans., Holy Cross Orthodox Press, Brookline, Mass., 2006, pgs. 39-42).

Mr Yannaras quotes Dostoyevsky on the fate of the Church in the West because of distortions of the Faith like the above:

‘A Sense of the Sacred in the South’

My father is fond of telling the story of his great-grandfather’s War sword.  As a boy, he was in his grandfather John Riley Boyd’s house in Rogers, Arkansas.  Resting above the hearth in a place of honor was the sword his grandfather’s father, a soldier in Tennessee, had carried with him in battle during the War of Northern Aggression.  His grandfather saw him looking at it, so he took it down and placed it in my father’s hands.  My father said it was like holding, in his words, ‘the holy grail.’

This story of my father’s represents an attitude that is widespread across Dixie, an attitude of reverence for people and things that are thought to possess and transmit a special energy of some kind, usually of the sort that heightens remembrance of a person or event.

This is expressed in different ways, sometimes publicly, sometimes privately.  The family of Jefferson Davis provides some examples of the latter, similar to the one given about my father and the War sword.

-Mr. Davis’s wife Varina, writing to her mother about John C. Calhoun’s funeral (1850):  ‘I will bring you a piece of his [Calhoun’s] hair when I come home’ (Jefferson Davis: Private Letters 1823-1889, Hudson Strode, edr., New York, Da Capo Press, 1995, p. 60).

-Mrs. Davis to her father, after the death of her son Samuel (1854):  ‘When I can I will send you some hair and a miniature of Sam’ (p. 79).

-Mrs. Davis to Mr. Davis (1866):  ‘Your dear letter enclosing your hair reached me safely upon my arrival here and cheered me at the threshold even more than the loving reception of my dear friends the Cobbs’ (pgs. 232-3).

A poem of Henry Timrod’s beautifully describes a public, communal expression of the South’s numinous sense.  It his ‘Ode,’ for the decoration of Confederate soldiers’ graves in Charleston, South Carolina, 1867:

‘Americanism Continues to Prepare the Way for Antichrist’

Archbishop Elpidophoros has followed up his awful July 4th encyclical [of 2024] with an equally atrocious prayer at the Republican National Convention.  In this part he embraces the spurious claim that the political institutions of the United States are the ‘world’s best hope’ for human freedom:

That they may embrace the needs of all Americans, and shine the light of good government upon the venerable institutions of the “world’s best hope” for every person’s life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

More perceptive Orthodox leaders have never been quite so sanguine about the Enlightenment political ideals that lay at the foundation of Americanism.  St Theophan the Recluse, to name one:

“When royal authority falls,” Theophan had said, “and the people everywhere institute self-government (republics, democracies), then there will be room for the Antichrist to act.  It will not be hard for Satan to prepare voices in favor of renouncing Christ, as experience showed during the French Revolution.  There will be no one to pronounce the authoritative veto.  And so when such regimes, suitable for disclosing the Antichrist’s aspirations, are instituted everywhere, then the Antichrist will appear.”

The Elder Athanasios Mitilinaios pulls the curtains back further on the anti-Christian nature of the US government and others.  Speaking of the battle of Armageddon in Revelation 19, he says (via Fr Peter Heers’s presentation):

These ungodly powers will consist of the atheist communism with its stronghold in the East, the atheist materialism of the West [i.e., the US, Western Europe, and their allies—W.G.], and the atheist Zionism of the Jews. Although these are different ideologies they share one common interest, which is to do away with Christ and His Church.  . . .  They set aside their differences in order to accomplish the goal.

So much for the US as protectors of all those vaunted freedoms, particularly the priceless pearl of MAGA Evangelical Protestantism, ‘religious freedom’.  How many times have Orthodox Christians watched in horror as the US military brutally attacked their brothers and sisters, in Serbia and Syria, in Gaza, the Ukraine, and Russia?  And yet here is Abp Elpidophoros solemnly invoking God’s (which God, we wonder?) protection on the US military at the RNC:

Finally, preserve, protect, and defend the Service men and women who daily safeguard our freedoms, so that in prosperity and tranquility we can worship You, the Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier of the Universe, and be the blesséd People whose God is the Lord.

Does his Eminence follow the news at all?  If he did, he might have been somewhat reluctant to say those lines.  There are other dreadful stories about the US military apart from those we have mentioned regarding the Orthodox:
