CHAPTER 30
Father John Stops a
Dreadful Epidemic
HERE IS WHAT M. M.
Rodzyanko related in his letter of December 29, 1927:
"In the eighties there
was a terrible epidemic of cholera in southern Russia, and it was especially
severe in the town of Novomoskovsk in the Province of Ekaterinslav. The
population sent a telegraph appealing to Father John, asking for his prayers.
An answer was received: 'I am praying for you.' And from that day on, the
cholera ceased."
The account of Vladimir
Vasilievich Gumlevski:
"In 1900 there was an
epidemic of Asian cholera in Taganrog. Father John came and made the rounds of
the sick, not the least afraid of catching it. After his departure the cholera
began to diminish and then disappeared completely."
While traveling by horse in
the north in the Province of Novgorod, Father John drove up to the boundary of
a quarantine beyond which no one was allowed to pass, since anthrax was raging there.
Father John got out of the carriage, asked for his vestments, and served a
moleben with the blessing of holy water for the cessation of plague in cattle.
When he finished, he said, "Behold the good fortune which God has sent
you. There shall be no more plague." Father John was allowed to pass
through the quarantine and he rode on further, and the plague ceased.
Unbelievers were wont to
say about those people who had been healed by Father John that he acted upon
them through the power of suggestion. Concerning the cessation of plague in
cattle which had taken hold of a vast territory; certainly no one can say that.
Is it even possible to speak about the power of suggestion over animals, and
ones scattered over a large area at that, in whose bodies malignant pathogens
were active?
Indeed, Father John acted
upon them, but by the power of God.

The Holy
Archangel Raphael is another:
‘Raphael:
the healing of God, the curer of human infirmities (Tobit 3:16, 12:15)’
May we have
healing of soul and body through their holy prayers.
